Mantra to Multiply Virtue

OṂ SAMBHARA SAMBHARA BIMANA SARA MAHĀ DZAWA HŪṂ / OṂ SMARA SMARA BIMANA SKARA MAHĀ DZAWA HŪṂ   (7x)

You recite this seven times. It increases the virtues one hundred thousand times. This is mentioned in the Sutra of the Completely Dedicated Chakra (Sutra of the Wheel of Complete Dedication).

Mantra to Bless the Rosary

Then you recite:

OṂ RUTSIRA MAṆI PRAWARTAYA HŪṂ   (7x)

[seven times] and then blow on your mala. If you do that, whatever mantras you recite or when you are talking about buddhas or tathagatas, how much it increases is by ten million. That ten million then becomes one hundred billion, a tragtrig, which I mentioned a few times. First ten million, then ten million increases to one tragtrig. Ten great terbum is one tragtrig, I don’t know what it is called.[1] Is it one billion or one hundred billion?

Student: Ten million.

Rinpoche: Ten million? It doesn’t matter; you can figure it out. I think it is one hundred billion or something. I am always caught in that. So, ten million increases to a tragtrig, then a tragtrig increases a hundred times. Then that increases a thousand times. This is taught in the Sutra of the Fathomless Celestial Mansion of Developed Jewels. These are the kinds of things that Buddha taught, due to being so compassionate to sentient beings. He taught these mantras so the merits of sentient beings could increase. Even if you recite one mantra, how it becomes so much is by the power of Buddha’s compassion, wishing to bring sentient beings to enlightenment. There are many other mantras for blessing the mala in Tibetan texts.

Mantra to Bless the Feet[2]

OṂ KHRETSA RAGHANA HŪṂ HRĪ SWĀHĀ   (7x)

Some texts say [to recite it] seven times; here it says three times. You recite it and then blow on your heels; not only blow on them, but spit on them after you chant it. Then, for that day any insects that die under your heels will be reborn in the deva realm of the Thirty-Three. It doesn’t mention here from what text that comes. It is important to have a pure reference, to quote a sutra text. I found it in another text, in the Root Tantra of Manjughosha (Jampäl Tsa Gyü). It is very good [to recite] when you’re walking on a beach, on the sand, where there are a lot of small, tiny crabs, or when you are walking on grass or in a forest where there are so many insects that jump when you walk.

Can you imagine on the road, when there is sunlight, how you see so many tiny insects? Then, when you are out of the sunlight you see nothing. Have you seen that? When there is a little bit of sunlight you see them, and then when you pass out of the sunlight, you don’t see them. They are there, but you don’t see them. Imagine that. It is unimaginable. When you walk there, there are so many insects. In many places, in Italy and even here recently, I have seen that when there is sunlight you see so many, but when there is no sunlight you do not see them. That is amazing. It really reminds you how the human body is so precious, the one that you have received now. It shows that this is so rare. Compared to the uncountable number, even relating to those tiny insects, our human body is extremely rare.

You should think [the Mantra for Blessing the Feet] is important, in your heart. Of course, the old students who met the Buddha-Dharma many years ago do, but I am saying this for those who don’t much value it. It is one important thing to make your life meaningful. I am making emphasis on that. In the text, it has this mantra, but then you never use it – don’t do like that. You must take advantage of it since the Buddha is helping us by making it very easy for us to achieve enlightenment, to purify all the negative karma and have quick realizations. You must think that. You must take that opportunity, not just leave it in the prayer book and then never take advantage of it in life and then die.

Remember, it depends upon where you are walking. If you are walking over a grassy field, recite this mantra and blow on your feet, on your shoes, so, in case they die, they will get reborn in the higher realms. But, I am not saying that if you see rain worms or a mouse or rats or crickets or spiders that you chant the mantra on your heavy shoes and then jump on them with your heavy shoes very heavily! I’m not saying that. I am not advertising in that way.

I suggest also to do the same thing, which I have mentioned in the past, when you drive a car. On the road there are so many ants and other sentient beings. Therefore, if you chant this mantra and spit on the car wheels, where the car touches the ground, or if you chant it over some water and blow on it, and then sprinkle that water on the wheels, then when you are driving far, when you are going somewhere, since there are definitely many insects on the road, they will get killed but then they will get a higher rebirth. You don’t have to think only [to bless] your shoes or your feet, but also anything similar.

Exalted Stainless Beam Totally Pure Light Mantra

So what I suggest is that (I mentioned this also during the 100 mllion mani retreat that we did recently in France) it is good to recite this mantra at the end. I received the oral transmission of this from Kyabje Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche or Kyabje Kyongla Rato Rinpoche. This is the Mantra of Arya Totally Pure Stainless Beam (Exalted Stainless Beam Totally Pure Light Mantra):

NAMAḤ NAWA NAWA TĪNÄN / TATHĀGATA GANG GĀNAṂ DĪWĀ LUKĀ NÄN / KOṬI NIYUTA ŚHATA SAHASRĀṆÄN / OṂ BO BO RI / TSARI ṆI TSARI / MORI GORI TSALA WĀRI SWĀHĀ   (21, 10, or a few times)

It is NAMAḤ NAWA NAWA TĪNÄN, not NAM, because it comes at the end. If [the NÄN] has a circle on top, now how to read that? If it comes at the end, then it is NÄN, but if it comes in the middle then it is NAM.

NAMAḤ NAWA NAWA TĪNÄN / TATHĀGATA GANG GĀNAṂ DĪWĀ LUKĀ NÄN / KOṬI NIYUTA ŚHATA SAHASRĀṆÄN / OṂ BO BO RI / TSARI ṆI TSARI / MORI GORI TSALA WĀRI SWĀHĀ   (21, 10, or a few times)

It’s TATHĀGATA GANG GĀNAṂ, because it is in the middle; there is no line so it just goes straight.

Generally, it is mentioned that in mantras the circle on top is sometimes NGA, sometimes NA, and sometimes MA. [The first row of the Sanskrit alphabet is] “KA KHA GA [GHA] NGA.” So if KA, KHA, GA have a circle on top, what comes at the end is NGA. So it would be KANG, KHANG, GANG, like that. If the NGA has a circle on top, then I’m not sure what it is! I haven’t found that yet. So it goes NAMAḤ NAWA NAWA TĪNÄN / TATHĀGATA GANG GĀNAṂ DĪWĀ LUKĀ NÄN / KOṬI NIYUTA ŚHATA SAHASRĀṆÄN / OṂ BO BO RI / TSARI ṆI TSARI / MORI GORI TSALA WĀRI SWĀHĀ.

In TSALA WĀRI, you are supposed to pronounce the [vowel] sound longer if the letter has an A at the bottom.

If you recite this after blessing the speech in the morning, then anybody who talks to that person who has recited this mantra in the morning, even if it is other people who talk to that person who recited the mantra in the morning, their negative karma gets purified. Here we are talking about the heavy negative karma “without break.” Without the break of what? Without the break of another life, of another karma. This negative karma is so powerful that right after death you immediately have to go [to the lowest hot hell]. Of course you have to go through the intermediate state. Except for the formless realm, for everything else you have to go through the intermediate state, even if it is just for one second. So immediately you go there and are then you are reborn in the lowest, number eight, hot hell, the most unbelievable hell realm, of which the suffering is the heaviest in samsara and for the longest time – one intermediate eon. [The five heavy negative karmas without break are] having killed your father or mother; having killed an arhat, one who is liberated from karma and delusions; causing blood to come from a buddha , harming a buddha’s body; and then dividing the Sangha. Even if they have committed any of these negative karmas in this life or in past lives, they get purified.

That means that if you chanted it this morning, then all the people who talk to you, all their negative karma – the very heavy negative karma of the karmas without break – gets purified. They don’t have to suffer from all that. Can you imagine? It is incredible. It is not exactly liberation, but from that heavy suffering they are free. What you give them is that. Anyone who talks to you, it helps them. Anybody who hears your voice, animals or people, and even those who receive the shadow of your body, and anybody who touches your body (that means even the flies and mosquitoes, the insects, that land on and touch your body, and anyone who shakes your hand), all of them get unbelievable benefit. Not only are they purified of this life’s negative karma, but it purifies their past lives’ negative karmas. So, there is no question that the ten non-virtues get purified. The ten non-virtues get purified as even the very heavy negative karmas without break get purified. This is good to remember.

Benefits of the Exalted Stainless Beam Totally Pure Light Mantra

One time I went to Shine Land, where the past owner of the land, an old lady, had three horses which were used to carry and bring food. They were quite old. I was reciting the Arya Sanghata Sutra to them to purify them and a lot of flies came and covered my arms. They landed on me. I don’t remember [always] but at that time I thought to make it meaningful and useful for them, for it to become purification for them, beneficial for them. Sometimes you shake hands with people, [so you can think] the purpose of shaking hands is to purify the person’s negative karma, to help their mind. Not only this mantra does this, but also chanting OM MANI PADME HUM. It doesn’t happen unceasingly but I try to chant ten malas of OM MANI PADME HUM daily for all those benefits that I mentioned. It’s most amazing. Sometimes I miss doing it, but I try to do that because there is also the benefit of purifying the negative karma of the people you touch, whether their heads or their hands. It is also good to remember that when we say hello, even if there is no real reason to talk, but to say that to purify the person’s negative karma.

Not only that, you don’t get harmed by spirits due to reciting this mantra. You don’t get harmed by poisons and so forth. You don’t receive poisonous animals’ bites and so forth. Then you don’t receive those kinds of life dangers, like lightning. Then, you are protected by all the buddhas. Then, you are looked after by Chenrezig. All the devas who are living in samaya are happy with you. You don’t get harmed by black magic – by mantras, certain preparations, or activities, certain substances on which are chanted mantras to harm others. You don’t get harmed by them – by black magic mantras and by these activities. If you put this mantra inside a stupa, anybody who sees the stupa, even anyone who hears about the stupa, and the insects or people who touch the stupa, and even if the earth, the dust, that goes over the stupa when the wind blows, touches any being, and also if the wind itself touches any being, people and insects, their negative karma gets purified and they don’t get reborn in the lower realms. They get reborn as happy migrating beings, as deva or human beings. Even if they came from the lower realms, it becomes impossible for them to be born back there again.

Guru Shakyamuni Buddha explained to the Bodhisattva Great Sattva Eliminating Obscurations, Great Secret (maybe Vajrapani), the Four Guardians, Brahma, those types of devas, Wangchug or Maheshvara, to these holy beings, “The heart of the king of secret mantras I am giving to you. I am handing it to you, so you should always respect and offer service to it. Keep it and put it inside a jewel container, and then announce it in all the places unceasingly and show it to the sentient beings. Then, if you make sentient beings to see and hear this, the five negative karmas without break will get purified.” He expounded like that.

Mantra of Great Wisdom Bimala Ushnisha

Then after this mantra, you can also recite this:

OṂ  HRIYADHE  SARWA  TATHĀGATA  HRIDAYA  GARBHE / DZOLA  DHARMADHATU  GARBHE  /  SANG  HARANA  ĀYUḤ  SANGŚHODHAYA  /  PĀPAṂ  SARWA  TATHĀGATA  SAMENDRA  UṢHṆĪKHA  BIMALE  BIŚHUDDHE  SWĀHĀ  (a few times)

By chanting this, if you make one tsatsa, it becomes ten million tsatsas. The four elements, anything that touches you, then becomes meaningful to sentient beings. Fire, water, or whatever touches you, becomes meaningful to sentient beings. Like a stupa, by touching it, their negative karma gets purified and they are liberated from the lower realms. It also purifies the five negative karmas without break and causes them to be born in a high caste, have a long life and wealth, remember their past lives, be protected from harm, and it immediately causes them to achieve enlightenment.

There are two types of mantras. One is this: OṂ HRIYADHE SARWA TATHĀGATA HRIDAYA... The other one is: OṂ TRAIYADHVE SARWA TATHĀGATA HRIDAYA… The rest of the mantra is the same. The beginning is different. OṂ TRAIYADHVE SARWA TATHĀGATA, that one is the Ushnisha Bimala mantra. It is called that. Just the beginning is different; the rest is the same.

The Benefits of the Mantra of Great Wisdom Bimala Ushnisha

There are two major benefits [of the Mantra of Great Wisdom Bimala Ushnisha]: it purifies the five very heavy negative karmas without the break of another life. Anybody who hears it, immediately that negative karma gets purified. So I try to chant that when I recite mantras for people or animals, along with the Maitreya Buddha mantra, which makes it impossible to be reborn in the lower realms. Then, if you do not become enlightened during Buddha Shakyamuni’s time, then when Maitreya Buddha descends you will be the first disciple to receive teachings and to receive the prediction to achieve enlightenment during Maitreya Buddha’s time. So, it is a very good mantra to recite for human beings and for other sentient beings, like animals.

This one is also a mantra for consecration. Whether you know many prayers for consecration, or whether you don’t know any prayers for consecration, if you chant this mantra,

OṂ  HRIYADHE  SARWA  TATHĀGATA  HRIDAYA  GARBHE / DZOLA  DHARMADHATU  GARBHE  /  SANG  HARANA  ĀYUḤ  SANGŚHODHAYA  /  PĀPAṂ  SARWA  TATHĀGATA  SAMENDRA  UṢHṆĪKHA  BIMALE  BIŚHUDDHE  SWĀHĀ

by the power of this mantra, which is highly admired in the Kangyur, the Buddha’s teachings, if there is a tree or a rock that the road goes around, then all the buddhas’ wisdom absorbs into that. You can use it to circumambulate mountains or a rock or a tree, or whatever. There are few different mantras for blessing the sky and for blessing the ocean. So, also on any holy object, you chant this mantra and all the buddhas’ wisdom absorbs into it. It is said in the text that this is the highest way, the best way, to consecrate.

[1] One terbum is 1 billion (109), a great terbum (terbum chen po) is 10 billion (1010), and a tragtrig is 100 billion (1011).
[2] Lama Zopa Rinpoche recommends that this mantra be recited in specific circumstances, such as when one is about to walk on grass or sand where there are small creatures, and also when one is going to drive a vehicle and there is risk of killing small creatures on the road.
