Hello,  Maybe you know this Friday, June 5 is the auspicious Sakadawa.  According to Tibetan Buddhism, Sakadawa is the day Buddha was born, reached Enlightenment, and died.  Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche cites the Vinaya text, Treasure of Quotations and Logic, as saying all our actions on this auspicious day - positive and negative - are multiplied by 100 million.  Rinpoche kindly suggests beneficial practices to do including reading sutras:  //fpmt.org/teachers/zopa/advice/sakadawa/

Many of the people on this forum don't live near dharma centres so the sutras may seem lengthy if reading alone.  Because of this, I wanted to share about a global sutra reading group that divides the sutras by chapters and pages.  These reading assignments are sent out the night before a reading (Japan time), and are usually read the following day or shortly thereafter.  It's usually about a 45-60 minute commitment.  Because of the many translations, international participants can read chapters assigned in their native language while others read in another.  And by doing it in a group, even as borderless as ours, a synergy is created, not to mention the group merit.

If interested, please join us!  You can read about the Golden Light Sutra at:  //fpmt.org/education/teachings/sutras/golden-light-sutra/   If you'd like to join us in reading this Friday or in the future, please let me know at tryrandomkindness@gmail.com  We usually read the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month unless there is an auspicious day, like Sakadawa.

May any positives generated by this sharing please go toward the long life of all perfect teachers, a calmer more compassionate world, and the successful completion of your Discovering Buddhism studies!
With appreciation,  Doc in Tokyo

Hi Doc,
This FAQ and Technical Forum is monitored by our IT people and is unlikely to be read by anyone else. Therefore, it would be better to re-post this information in the DB forum itself where the DB students are much more likely to see it.

I hope the sutra reading gets a lot of participation this Sakadawa. Our world really needs a lot of help at the moment. Joan

Hi Joan,

Many thanks for letting me know where to get more circulation about sutra reading.  It took longer than expected last night to try and  post it!   Yes, we do need to have the Golden Light embracing our planet -- some areas more than others.

Hope you're well.  Our state of emergency was lifted throughout Japan 9 days ago.  People continue to be vigilant and do the best they can.  Let's hope it'll be enough.

Keep well and thanks again!   doc
