I can only get DBM2-1-01-Introduction.mp3 two play. All other mp3 files in Session 1 won't open, in any play format. I just read the PDF version instead, but when I got to Meditation 1, DB-M2-Med1-Meditation on awareness of Breath.mp3 I can't get that one to open either. A separate window opens up with a Quicktime image and a question mark in front of it. Itunes recognizes it as a file, but doesn't recognize it's length and won't play it.

Any help?

I experienced the same thing. Like you, I turned to the pdfs. However I did try the mp3 files again at a later time and they worked without a problem.

Can you please let me know which type of computer (e.g PC, Mac, Mobile device etc) and internet browser (e.g Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari etc) you are using to access the OLC in order to test and help further with this problem.

In general all the MP3 files have being added to the Online learning center in directory listings (rather than as streaming audio files) to allow easy download of the files. It is recommended that you download these MP3 files and then listen to them directly from your computer or import them into Itunes for adding to IPOD (by adding a folder to Itunes where you have saved the files).

In order to download the files, you just need to right click on a file when you are in the directory listing and then select 'Save as' or 'Save Link as' or some similar option to save the files locally.

It is possible to play the files directly from the site by clicking on them and this behaves different depending on your internet browser e.g. Google Chrome opens a streaming page which starts playing the file straight away, Firefox asks you to either save the file or open it (opening it downloads it into a temporary directory and then plays is) etc. so while this option is available, it is preferable to download the files.

So please send me more information on your system by email to onlineedu@fpmt.org or by posting a reply to this forum and I will try and help further. Please also test the files by downloading some of them to see if this solves the problem.

I have a Mac and I use Safari. Clicking on the files makes them stream in a separate window. I tried right clicking on it, and my options are:

I have a Mac and I use Safari. Clicking on the files makes them stream in a separate window. I tried right clicking on it, and my options are:

1. Open with iTunes
2. Open in a New Window
3. Open in a New Tab
4. Download linked file
5. Download linked file as ..
6. Add link to bookmarks
7. Copy link

Option 1 makes it start in iTunes, has the name of the file, but where a running time usually is it just has 0:00 and where an end time usually is it's just blank. It won't start playing.

Option 2 & 3 have the same problem with a quicktime image appearing with a question mark in front of it.

Option 4 & 5 has me download the file. After I download it, when I open it a new Safari window opens up and it goes to FPMT.org and asks me to log in. After logging in, it directs me to the online learning center home page. Opening the file again does the same thing, asks me to log back in. No where do I have the option to play anything. I tried to manually open the file in iTunes after I downloaded it, but the name of the file is "DB-M2-Med1-Meditation on awareness of the breath.mp3.html" In the Itunes library, it has the same name as the name of the file, minus the "html" part, and the time is put down as "Continuous"

Options 6 & 7 won't really help me, so I didn't even try those.

From reading your email, it seems to me that somehow the files are downloading for you in HTML web page format rather than as MP3 format e.g. the sample file you downloaded should be called DB-M2-Med1-Meditation on awareness of the breath.mp3.html and not DB-M2-Med1-Meditation on awareness of the breath.mp3.html with the html extension on the end which is for webpages.

I myself have a windows PC and have tested these files with Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer which all work for me. I have also tested this file with an IPAD using Safari which also works for me but i do not have a MAC with Safari to test this and send more detailed support. However i will contact someone that i know has a mac and ask them to test this and if any other mac users with Safari rad this, please share your experiences for playing the mediation file in question.

Just for your information when i was on the page that allows me to download the meditaion file at https://onlinelearning.fpmt.org/mod/resource/view.php?id=14 when i right clicked ON the file it gave me an option to download the file as DB-M2-Med1-Meditation on awareness of the Breath.mp3 but if i just clicked on this page (and not on the file) it wanted to save it as Meditation 1 - Meditation on Awareness of the Breath.htm which is saving the wbepage but not the file.

So i hope i will find out more soon to help with the problem you are having and thank you for your patience.

I tested the file he mentioned in Safari and had no problems. I could play it in QT separately and in QT in a Safari window. I could save it and play it back, and it was saving correctly with the .mp3 extension. I also tested all of the session 1 audio files with no problem. FYI, I don't usually use Safari so my version (4.0.3) hasn't been updated in over a year. My Quicktime is version 7.6.4, and my Mac is from 2006, OSX 10.4.1.

It does sound like he's having an extension problem though. Often when I have those issues with my Mac, I simply change the extension and that usually solves it. He could right click on the file and select "Get Info" and remove the .html part of the extension and try opening the file again.

I am now going to email you the MP3 file for the meditation directly by email which i hope you can download and test to see if it will play. Please then send me a list of any other MP3 files you cannot open.

I received an email which i am copying below which lists some known issues with saving MP3 files with Google Chrome and MAC Safari. In particular the link at http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=824997 seems similar to the issue you are having. So i am copying this here in case helpful.

Google Chrome for both Windows and Mac has known issues with saving files from webpages similar to this discussion -- unlike IE which offers a Save Target As... when you right-click, Chrome has the Save Link As... similar to FireFox, but people complain that when they do this it sometimes just saves the actual html link and not the target file. There is a discussion about it on the Google Chrome forum: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=5ec2d97304f8906c&hl=en Hitting Ctrl+S on Windows or Cmd+S on a Mac when the file is playing will always let you save the file, but it has to be playing first. That said, Chrome works fine for me, and the right-click Save Link As... has never tried to save a link as html for me.

In regards to Mac Safari, here is an interesting thread of people unhappy with Safari's download options: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=824997. It sounds like it used to work, then a recent update to either Safari or Quicktime (or both) has removed the Save File As... option, so people have to go through strange steps to download .mp3s. I suspect it is when people have Quicktime installed as their default media player on a Mac. At any rate, the other browsers seem to work fine.

Thanks for all the help and support everyone. I tried everything, went to every link, updated, tried renaming, tried re-configuring, you name it I did it. But nothing worked. Finally I just downloaded firefox and used that. That solved the problem.

I guess it's something to do with my version of Mac, Safari, or both. Who knows.

I just encountered the exact same problems that Justin mentioned with DB2. I think I've found a fix though. I have a MacBook and the program tries to run through Quick Time. My browser is Safari. I was getting the same question mark that Justin was.

By right clicking on the file I got several choices. Tried Download to I-Tunes which didn't work. Next I tried Download Linked File, and this was successful. It downloaded and automatically used I-Tunes to run it. Hope this works for others who encounter the same problem.

So hopefully there are now two ways of solving this problem which is to use a different browser such as Firefox or to you the method you used above to download the file.

I also think that this error only occurs for certain versions and combinations of Safari and Quicktime on Macs so hopefully this problem does not effect a large number of users.
