In Session 1 it states Meditation serves to make us more familiar w/positive states of mind. However later it states by looking at our mind we will understand the root problem of our unhappy, unpeaceful, stressed lives.

My question is do we meditate seeking solutions to particular problems?

Meditation can be applied to many different subjects. when we meditate, we choose just one thing (called the object of the meditation) and focus on that.

Sometimes the object of meditation is a fault, such as anger. Another object of meditation might be Shakyamuni Buddha, or a positive state of mind such as rejoicing.

Whatever the object of the meditation, the motivation for doing the meditation is to achieve enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings. To do this, we need to have some idea as to how any one meditation benefits.

When we understand the link between the meditation and the ultimate goal, then, in the end, all meditation leads to positive states of mind.
